Wood and clad wood replacement windows continue to be the top cost-effective home improvement projects, according to the 2011 cost vs. value report by Remodeling magazine. In fact, wood windows ranked among the five most cost-effective home improvements in the magazine's annual report.
In medium-sized remodeling projects, wood windows returned 72.4% of their cost on resale, according to the report. In large-scale remodeling projects, wood windows returned 67.5 percent of their cost on resale. Other high-return improvement projects include attic bedrooms (returning 83.1% of cost), wood deck addition (80.6%) and minor kitchen remodel (78.3%).
And it's not just windows that make a difference. Patio doors, sliding glass doors, and wood French doors can change traffic flow, provide access and supervision to children's play areas, and bring the outdoors closer to the indoors.
